Did you know that half of the people that set New Year’s Resolutions don’t even stick to them for a whole year, and 20% for less than a month? (Forbes 2020 survey)
How’s that for an article hook? It’s been a few months since this blog has seen a post and I might be resorting to traditional SEO and click-baity tactics. Don’t worry, you’ll still get all your tips on how to set and stick to resolutions. I just wanted to start the year off strong with some good engagement, and share with you some of the projects I’ve been up to.
Setting New Year’s Resolutions typically comes around the end of December, but right now I bet a lot of you are wondering where you might have gone wrong, if you should make better resolutions, or if you can get a late start. Good news, it’s never too late to set goals for yourself. It’s also never too late to pick up a goal you accidentally never dropped. Progress is rarely just an upward trend, so it’s important to give yourself a break. Here are some tips on New Year’s Resolutions.
- Figure out what really matters to you. Goals are great to have but if you don’t have a passion for them, you’re not gonna have the energy to chase them. Why set a goal to be rich when in reality you just want money to travel and not stress about work as much?
For me, I thought posting regularly to this blog was a good goal for me (as it seems to be for so many others) but last year on the months I didn’t post I just kept asking myself “who would care about this post? I barely do!” Realistically, I’d be happy with one post reaching ten thousand views even if it was my only post all year. So, while I do hope to post more frequently, one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to write posts that a lot of people will really care about (such as this post)! - Set specific, attainable goals. What does it really mean to “be happier” anyway? Even something like “improve diet” is vague, would you accomplish it by eating one less chocolate than last year? How do you keep track? The best way to really stick to something is to know what you’re aiming for. Since diet and fitness were some of the most common resolutions for 2023, maybe your goal could be to have one salad a week, and go on a 30 minute walk twice a week.
While my goals are to expand my business, I made them specific with follower count goals on my individual social medias. For my Author and Gaming Tiktoks, I’m hoping to reach 10k followers to be able to monetize both accounts. For my Twitter, I’m hoping for 5k followers, and the same goes for my Twitch. - Find ways to hold yourself accountable. It’s really easy to say “no one will know if I fail my resolutions if they don’t even know I have resolutions.” Don’t let this be you! Tell the people you’re close to. Find an accountability buddy, maybe even people who share similar resolutions. At the very least write down your goals somewhere, bonus points if you have timed goals written on a calendar.
This blog post is my accountability buddy. Not only have I written out most of my goals and shared them with you all, I’ll share the rest. I’m hoping to get another web series started by the end of January called Magi P.I., and I’m also planning to write the sequel to Aradia The Witch. While I don’t plan to publish anymore novels until I get more sales (and/or more reads on my web series’), I also plan to write the first book in my next series Celestera.
As a wrap up on my own resolutions, I plan to donate my books to libraries and used book stores so that hopefully they find more people who will love them. I also hope to (eventually) create a whole separate site for my Magisters content, so this blog doesn’t feel so split between the Magisters and the rest of my content. Magisters essentially has it’s own audience so I shouldn’t force both audiences in one place (though if you all could check out my other content, that’d be amazing).
I hope these tips help some people find their way. As always I want to put good out into the world, and this post is just one of the ways I’m trying to do that. I want my content, writing and otherwise, to be a positive thing in peoples lives.
Working towards a better you is always an uphill battle. Asking yourself to give 100% all the time is an exhausting and impossible task. Give yourself some room to make mistakes, to fall and get back up again, and to be less than productive some days. I know that beating myself up for missing posts and not growing to be an internet celebrity immediately did nothing but hold me back. Enjoy the ride, be proud of where you are, and look forward to the journey to come.
